Our Journey

Horner Pietersma Stewart was founded in the heart of Morrisburg, Ontario and has been serving the Eastern Ontario region for six decades. 

We started as a local firm with two lawyers and have grown into a trusted team of 5 lawyers, serving individuals, businesses, and families across multiple generations in Morrisburg and the surrounding areas.

Our journey is defined by a commitment to building deep, enduring relationships with our clients. We understand that legal needs can be complex and deeply personal, which is why many of our clients stay with us for years—often across generations.

We continue to provide the highest level of legal services through a meticulous, client-focused approach—all combined with the small-town approachability that has been a cornerstone of our practice.

    Morgan Barkley

    Morgan began her legal career immediately after graduating on the Dean’s List from the Legal and Executive program at Algonquin College in 2016. She assists all lawyers, primarily Kristen Godwin-Stewart, with real estate matters, including residential, commercial, and agricultural properties. Born and raised in Winchester, Morgan continues to reside there.

    Diane Bass

    Diane was born and raised in this area, attending Seaway District High School, where she served as valedictorian for her graduating class. She went on to Algonquin College, completing a Legal Assistant program. Diane first worked with our office as a summer student during her college years. Her first role within her field was with a title-searching firm in Ottawa. In 1987, her career took a different direction when she began working for the Royal Bank in Iroquois, where she remained for the next 13 years. Diane rejoined our office in 2001 and currently handles all real estate title searching and related duties.

    Outside the office, Diane has been an active community volunteer for many years. She has served on various boards, volunteered at the local school, and contributed to numerous fundraising efforts for local organizations and causes.

    Sherry Boulerice

    Sherry first joined our office as part of a work placement program for Grade 12 students through Seaway District High School. She returned as a summer student after graduation and completed a second work placement through St. Lawrence College in Cornwall. Sherry graduated in 1984 with a diploma in Secretarial Arts - Legal, completing the two-year program in just one year.

    With over 40 years of experience, Sherry has developed expertise in all facets of real estate law, including residential, commercial, and agricultural properties. She also assists with the firm’s municipal law and litigation files. Sherry’s local knowledge and commitment to client service make her an invaluable member of our team.

    Born, raised, and still residing in Morrisburg, Sherry remains deeply connected to the community.

    Mary Murphy

    Mary joined us in March 2016 as our new bookkeeper. She brought with her many years of experience in both bookkeeping and human resource management. Mary was born and raised in Montreal but has lived in the S.D. & G. area for the past 25 years.

    Amy Myers

    Amy has been with our firm since 2018. After graduating from Carleton University with a B.A. in Sociology, she decided to pursue a career in addictions counseling, leading her to complete a degree in Addictions Treatment and Prevention from Georgian College. After several years in the field, Amy decided to transition into legal work.

    She graduated from the Law Clerk (Intensive) Program at Algonquin College in 2013 and has been working in the area ever since. Amy currently assists our lawyers with corporate law matters and has experience in real estate, estates, and estate planning. She enjoys working with clients and is always eager to assist.

    When not at work, Amy enjoys spending time with her husband and two children, reading, and hiking.

    Kelly VanBeilen

    After graduating from college with both a Certificate in Ambulance and Emergency Care and a Law Clerk Diploma, Kelly began working in Ottawa, focusing on litigation and family law. She then worked in Brockville, Ontario, for four years, primarily in the areas of real estate, estate planning, and estates. Now residing in Morrisburg, Kelly has worked as a Legal Assistant there since 2004. She currently assists our lawyers in family law, municipal law, and litigation.

    Tracey VanBruinessen

    Tracey graduated from the Legal Assistant program at Sir Sandford Fleming College in 1995. She worked as a Legal Assistant in Chesterville, Morrisburg, and Ottawa from 1995 until 2002, primarily focusing on real estate, title searching, estates, and estate planning, with some emphasis on corporate work. In 2002, Tracey took a part-time position with The Bank of Nova Scotia to spend more time with her young family.

    Tracey returned to her role as a Legal Assistant in real estate in Chesterville and Morrisburg from 2010 until 2021, when she joined our real estate team. Born and raised in Winchester, Tracey continues to reside there with her family.

    Jim Whelan

    A dedicated professional, Jim has been with our office since October 2016. He graduated from St. Lawrence College in 1984 with a Financial Accounting diploma. In addition to working at Horner Pietersma Stewart, he manages his own insurance business, which he continues to develop. Jim is married and resides in Cornwall.

    Robin Winters

    Robin works alongside Eric Pietersma, primarily on real estate matters. She has been with Horner Pietersma Stewart (and its previous incarnations) since 1989. Robin greatly enjoys working with clients and is a dedicated contributor to all the matters she handles. She resides near Ingleside, Ontario, with her family.

    Alyssa Wopat

    The newest addition to the team, Alyssa handles all matters related to wills, powers of attorney, and estates. She graduated from the two-year Law Clerk program at Algonquin College in 2021. Born and raised in Winchester Springs, Alyssa continues to reside there, enjoying the small-town atmosphere and being close to family. Outside of work, you can find Alyssa outdoors, appreciating all that nature has to offer.

    Security Team

    Lily and Rose are the most popular personalities at Horner Pietersma Stewart. These two sisters were formerly at the SPCA in Brockville and now reside in the office full-time, providing both security and some much-needed stress relief to clients and staff. If you visit the office, you may see them, and, depending on their mood, they might decide to greet you in person.
